1926 – 2016

RUMFORD — Josephine E. Briggs, 90, formerly of Dixfield, died Wednesday. Aug. 24, at her residence at the Rumford Community Home, Rumford.

She was born in Byron on Jan. 31, 1926, the daughter of Ellery and Grace (Brown) Poland, and had attended Byron schools.

Josephine was the department manager at W.T. Grant Co. in Rumford for several years and also worked for several shoe companies before retiring in the early 1980s from G.H. Bass in Rumford as a stitcher instructor.

She was married in Auburn on Nov. 9, 1941, to Dwight E. Briggs Sr. who died in Rumford on June 3, 1991.

Survivors include daughters, Joyce Robbins of Dixfield, Susan Canwell and husband, Maurice, of Roxbury, Martha Paulin and husband, Joseph Jr., of Mexico, Barbara Fitzpatrick and husband, David, of Rumford, and Katherine Campbell and husband, Kit, of Mexico; sons, Dwight Briggs Jr., and wife, Susan, of Mexico, Robert Briggs and wife, Elyse, of Rumford, Richard Briggs and wife, Sheryl, of Mexico, and David Briggs and wife, Deborah, of Byron; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by a son-in-law, David Robbins; and a great-granddaughter, Rebecca Cushman.
