Joseph Palleschi, assistant to the president of Bliss College of Lewiston, and Basil Sequin, college treasurer, said Saturday the school will fight an attempt by the Maine Board of Education to force the school to drop the term “college” from its name. They pointed out that the school was chartered in 1909 as Bliss Business College and in 1958 the name was changed to Bliss College. The state agency entered an action Friday in Androscoggin Superior Court asking that the name be changed.

About 30 young men and women slept outside Thursday night on the Bates College campus in an attempt to call attention to the homeless problem in Lewiston. The “sleep-in,” the second of the week, was held in front of the Memorial Commons building on the campus. The organizers, students at Bates College, planned the action to correspond with the recent release of Mayor James P. Howaniec’s housing task force report. “We want to show support for the mayor’s task force report in hopes that he will take it seriously,” said Alexander Dwinell, one of the sleep-in’s organizers. “The report cites that there were 100 families turned away from shelters and 386 homeless adolescents last year in Lewiston. Still, people can’t seem to see that it’s a problem here.”
