LEWISTON — A car and bicycle collided at Main and Park streets on Thursday morning, sending the bicyclist to the hospital.

The bicyclist was identified by police as Matthew Bowler, 62, of Greene. He was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center where he received stitches to his scalp, police said.

A witness said he was driving up Main Street when he saw a man lying in the roadway next to a car.

Roger Boisvert, who lives locally, pulled his vehicle over and administered first aid to the man until emergency medical technicians arrived. Boisvert said he pulled some rags from the back of his car to apply pressure to the back of the man’s bleeding head.

Police said Bowler was on Main Street and attempting to turn left across northbound traffic onto Park Street. A car in the near lane stopped to let him cross. But a car in the far lane didn’t see Bowler and Bowler collided with that car, a 2001 white Volkswagen Passat driven by Joi Bennett of Auburn. Police said she had the right of way.
