PORTLAND — Bishop Robert P. Deeley announces three priest assignments, including the arrival of two new priests from the Heralds of Good News, a missionary society of apostolic life in India that specializes in the promotion of vocations to the priesthood.
Effective Nov. 10, the Rev. Kingsly Reagan Kothakotta Yagappan, HGN, is parochial vicar of Prince of Peace Parish. This includes the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Holy Cross Church and Holy Family Church, all in Lewiston.
Born in Vellore, India, Yagappan earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Acharya Nagarjuna University in Andhra Pradesh, India; a master’s degree in Christian studies from the University of Madras in Tamil Nadu, India; and a licentiate degree in moral theology from Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram in Bangalore, India.
He was ordained to the priesthood in Tamil Nadu on April 29, 2010. Since his ordination, Yagappan has served as an assistant priest in Gurazala, a village in Andhra Pradesh; pursued his licentiate in moral theology; and taught moral theology to seminarians for three years at St. Joseph’s Major Seminary in Khammam, also in India. Following another brief parish assignment, he accepted the invitation to come to Maine.
Effective Nov. 10, the Rev. Nehru Stephen Savayaria, HGN, is parochial vicar of the Parish of the Precious Blood. This includes Holy Rosary Church in Caribou; Nativity of the Blessed Mary Church, Presque Isle; Our Lady of the Lake Church, Portage; Sacred Heart Church, Caribou; St. Catherine Church, Washburn; St. Denis Church, Fort Fairfield; St. Joseph Church, Mars Hill; St. Louis Church, Limestone; St. Mark Church, Ashland; and St. Theresa Church, Stockholm.
Born in Pinjivakkam Kandigai, India, Savayaria earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Annamalai University in Tamil Nadu, India. He was ordained to the priesthood on April 10, 2013, at Heralds of Good News Minor Seminary, also in Tamil Nadu. Since his ordination, he has served as an assistant parish priest at St. Thomas Mount International Shrine in Chennai, India, which marks the burial place of St. Thomas, the apostle. He then served as house superior at the Heralds of Good News Provincialate for two years before departing for his new assignment in Maine.
Effective Dec. 5, the Rev. Dominic Azagbor, OP, will be parochial vicar of All Saints Parish. This includes St. Charles Borromeo Church in Brunswick; St. John the Baptist Church, Brunswick; St. Mary Church, Bath; Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Boothbay Harbor; St. Ambrose Church, Richmond; St. Patrick Church, Newcastle; and St. Katharine Drexel Church, Harpswell.
Since October 2015, Azagbor has served as parochial vicar of St. Brendan the Navigator Parish in midcoast Maine.
Azagbor professed his vows to the Order of Preachers in 1988 and served in a variety of capacities at parishes in Nigeria and Ghana before being ordained to the priesthood in April 2000. From 2002-05, he served as assistant chaplain at the University of Ife in the Diocese of Oshogbo, Nigeria. From 2005-09, he served as associate pastor at St. Jude Catholic Church in Mafoluku, part of the Archdiocese of Lagos, Nigeria.
In 2010, Azagbor arrived in the U.S. and was assigned as chaplain to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, where he also served as chaplain to the Maria Joseph Continuing Care Community, comprised of The Meadows, an independent living facility for seniors; Maria Joseph Manor, an assisted-living facility; and the Emmanuel Center, a nursing and rehabilitation center.
Azagbor holds a bachelor’s degree in theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome, Italy, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria.
