Lewiston Public Library Director Rick Speer is convinced an automated circulation system would benefit both employees and patrons of the Lewiston Public Library. Last year, the City Council rejected Speer’s proposal to spend $35,000 for computer hardware and software to upgrade the circulation desk. “I’m hoping to find some cheaper alternatives for this (coming) year,” he said. Under automation, the library’s collection would be entered into a computer database so that checkouts and returns of library materials could be scanned quickly, much like items at large grocery stores. The labor-intensive card system the library now uses, Speer said, is a severe drain on employee time, time that could be better spent responding to the inquiries and special needs of library users.
