BERLIN, N.H. (AP) – Construction of a federal prison in Berlin will create hundreds of new jobs and bring millions of dollars to Coos County, according to a new state report.

The study by New Hampshire Employment Security projects the prison’s economic impact from construction scheduled to begin in 2008. It estimates the prison will bring a gross $23 million a year to Coos County between 2008 and 2016.

From the report:

• The project will create 300 jobs over the course of the 2½-year construction; 700 people will work in those jobs with total payroll of $48 million.

• Construction will indirectly create another 100 jobs in retail and service industries.

• Once complete, prison will employ about 325 people and have a payroll of $19.1 million.

• Forty percent of prison employees will transfer from other facilities; 20 percent will come from northern New Hampshire; the rest will come from other areas, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The Bureau of Prisons is building a $230 million,1,280-inmate facility in Berlin.
