I am writing to weigh in on Poland Spring’s interest in a potential new spring source in Rumford.
Many people think of Poland Spring as just a water company. As the president of Hartt Transportation, I see Poland Spring’s positive contributions to Maine on a regular basis, which is why it is difficult for me at times to believe that this homegrown company faces such opposition as it continues to grow its business.
Poland Spring is a job creator and not just because they employ more than 800 Mainers. At Hartt Transportation alone, approximately 180 drivers have stable, paying jobs, just by the fact they handle shipping volumes for Poland Spring. And there are many other businesses in the state that are able to provide jobs to fellow Mainers because of the work they do with the company.
On top of being a successful business, Poland Spring is an excellent corporate citizen. They hold themselves to the highest of standards and are sensitive to the needs and concerns of Mainers. The company is an active member in communities across the state through charitable, educational and environmental initiatives, as well as donations of water, food, funds and time.
As the Rumford Water District deliberates on whether or not to move forward with a new spring, I encourage Rumford residents to take a step back and look at all the contributions Poland Spring is making in Maine. Poland Spring’s success is Maine’s success, and there is a lot to gain as they grow.
