LEWISTON – Herbert H. Scherzer, M.D., a pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine specialist, has been appointed to the Central Maine Medical Center medical staff. He is practicing with Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates, a CMMC physician practice.

Prior to joining the Lewiston-Auburn medical community, Scherzer served as director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Mill Hill, Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport, Conn. He was also chief of pulmonary and critical care medicine at Mill Hill. He previously worked in a similar capacity at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, Conn.

A graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., he earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, N.Y. He completed an internal medicine residency at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. In 1976, he completed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Conn. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in lung immunopathology the following year at UCHC.

Scherzer has been awarded multiple honors during his academic, teaching and professional career. He is presently an associate professor of clinical medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, Conn.

He is certified in pulmonary disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has attained sub-specialty special qualifications in critical care. He is a fellow of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. His special practice interest is sleep disorders.
