BANGOR (AP) – Hundreds of applicants for 130 jobs at a new slot machine parlor that’s due to open this fall are expected to receive word on whether they’ll be hired within a couple of weeks, according to the general manager.

The promise of jobs at Penn National’s Hollywood Slots in downtown Bangor drew applicants from as far north as Millinocket and from as far south as Waterville. The pool of applicants includes a mix of people who are employed, underemployed and unemployed, Hollywood General Manager Jon Johnson said.

“Over the next couple of days, we’re going to be interviewing about 560 people, and we’re still getting walk-ins,” Johnson said Wednesday, the first day of the company’s three-day job fair at the Bangor Career Center.

“We’re looking for people who enjoy serving other people,” Johnson said. “Customer service, that’s everything. It’s all about customer service and building relationships. You’ve got to like working with people.”

Johnson said applicants should receive word about jobs within a couple of weeks.

With the exception of wait staff positions, slots jobs will pay from about $6.50 to $14.42 an hour, depending on the position. Supervisory and management salaries are in the $30,000 to $35,000 range, according to Penn National. Benefits include health, dental and life insurance, and paid vacation time.

Among the applicants was Wayne Dionne of Old Town, who is seeking a security position that would provide supplemental income.

“I think it would be kind of interesting,” Dionne said. “I go to Foxwoods and I’ve been to Mohegan Sun, so I think it would be fun. I’m used to dealing with the public anyway.”

The Hollywood Slots is to serve as an interim facility while Penn National develops a permanent racino, which will be part of the Bangor harness racing track.
