LEWISTON- Dr. Amir Modarressi recently joined the medical staff at the St. Mary’s Regional Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders as an oncologist/hematologist.
Modarressi received his medical degree from the Azad University School of Medicine in Tehran, Iran and completed his residency at Morristown Memorial Hospital under the direction of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
He completed his fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he served as Chief Fellow.
Modarressi comes to the St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center from the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla., where he received training in blood and bone marrow transplantation.
“I am pleased to join the Greater Lewiston/Auburn region. People have been very warm and welcoming. I look forward to caring for the medical needs of the community,” Modarressi said.
Board certified in internal medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Modarressi is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology. His current research interests include leukemia, stem cell transplantation, as well as bleeding and clotting disorders.
While living in Iran, Modarressi worked with the World Health Organization in a nationwide program to vaccinate citizens against polio as well as a program to screen children for rheumatic heart disease.
Modarressi is joining the practice with Dr. Charles Tashima and registered nurse Pamela Sirois at 97 Campus Ave. next to the hospital.
Trade center offering seminar
PORTLAND – The Maine International Trade Center is offering a new seminar for Maine businesses interested in learning strategies to save money on imported components and products. The seminar, titled Duty Saving Techniques for Importers, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Jan. 22, in Portland.
It includes key topics such as tariff engineering, reimportation, foreign trade zones and agent relationships. Duty Drawback (refunds on customs duties paid), an important procedure particularly for manufacturers importing components and exporting finished goods, will also be covered. Featured speakers at the program are Paula Connelly from Middleton and Shrull and Ed DeSousa from Global Drawback, Inc.
The program is part of the Citizens Bank Foundation International Trade Education Series and will be held at the Maine International Trade Center at 511 Congress St. Cost is $30 for center members and $60 for nonmembers. Maine state legislators may attend at no charge.
