SACO (AP) – A popular water park in southern Maine is going on the auction block.
Aquaboggan, which features three twisting water slides, an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a 750,000-gallon wave pool as well as other water attractions, will go to the highest bidder on Nov. 6 in Saco.
The auction by Paul McInnis Inc. is the latest twist for the park, which has had its share of problems including a $1 million verdict in a personal injury lawsuit last February. After the verdict, a lawyer for the injured patron discovered that the park had no liability insurance.
Compounding the park’s problems were federal immigration charges brought in Iowa against one of the owners.
John Glessner faces four months in prison for continuing to employ illegal aliens at egg farms in Iowa after knowing their status, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Judith Whetstine. Glessner pleaded guilty in March.
Merit Management LLC bought Aquaboggan from Wesley and Wayne Hurst in March of 1999, according to the city.
The Hursts sold the property to Merit, but continued to hold the mortgage, said auctioneer Paul McInnis. Merit made payments to the Hursts, and when the park’s new owner fell in arrears, said McInnis, the Hursts foreclosed and scheduled an auction.
Glessner is a longtime business associate of Jack DeCoster, who was fined $3.8 million for health and safety violations at his egg farm in Turner. The fine was later reduced after DeCoster made improvements.
Glessner managed payroll for DeCoster until he and the farm’s former spokeswoman, Sally Christner, bought the water park.
The park, a popular summer attraction for families on Saco’s Route 1 strip, operated this summer.
According to the city, the land, real estate and personal property on the site is assessed at $3.13 million. City taxes owed from last year and this year total almost $50,000, according to the tax collector.
