BANGOR (AP) – A St. David man who took part in a conspiracy to smuggle large amounts of marijuana across the St. John River from Canada has been sentenced in federal court to two years in prison.

Ben Dionne had pleaded guilty to the drug conspiracy charge and to failure to appear. The 29-year-old Dionne fled to Canada after being released on bail.

Dionne, who was sentenced Wednesday in Bangor, also was fined $4,000 and faces three years of probation when he gets out of prison.

Officials say Michael Pelletier of St. David ran the multimillion-dollar smuggling operation from his wheelchair while collecting government disability checks.

The 56-year-old Pelletier was sentenced last year to life imprisonment.
