PORTLAND (AP) – The Movies on Exchange, an art-house theater in the heart of Portland’s Old Port district, has closed after a 32-year run.

Owners Steve and Judy Halpert were on hand Sunday to greet regular moviegoers who turned out in snowy weather for the final showings. The last film was “Casablanca,” which the theater opened with in 1976.

Steve Halpert said he was sorry to close but he and his wife were ready for a change.

The Movies on Exchange featured alternative, independent, foreign, documentary and classic films.

The Halperts will continue to show movies at the Portland Museum of Art, where they will be adjunct film curators.
