GRAY (AP)- The former fiance of a slain nursing student from Alfred was arrested Friday in New Hampshire after a Maine grand jury indicted him for her murder.
Jason Twardus, 27, of Rochester, N.H., was arrested at his workplace, Cole-Haan Shoes in Greenland, N.H., in connection with the death of Kelly Gorham, 30, who disappeared in August 2007.
Her body was found a month later in a shallow grave on property owned by Twardus’ father in Stewartstown, N.H., near the Canadian border.
“This case has been worked tenaciously since Kelly disappeared,” Lt. Brian McDonough of the Maine State Police said at a news conference where Jason Twardus’ arrest was announced.
“We did several interviews early on with Mr. Twardus,” McDonough said. “He’s someone who’s been a person of interest in this case since its inception.”
The indictment came after Maine investigators took charge of the case when officials from the two states who were working on it jointly concluded that the killing took place on its side of the border.
Investigators would not release the cause of Gorham’s death or specify where in Maine they believe she was killed.
The York County grand jury handed up the Twardus indictment on Thursday but it was kept secret until his arrest early Friday afternoon.
He was taken to the Rockingham County House of Correction pending a fugitive hearing on Jan. 20.
to determine whether he will waive extradition. The hearing was delayed until then to allow Twardus to obtain legal counsel.
Twardus and Gorham had broken up two months prior to her disappearance, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
