CARIBOU (AP) – A Limestone woman has been found not guilty of manslaughter in the death of a 20-month-old girl she was baby sitting last year.

An Aroostook County Superior Court jury deliberated less than three hours Wednesday before finding 25-year-old Heather Fortin not guilty in the death of Teairra Leathers.

Fortin called police on June 18, 2007, reporting that Teairra was unresponsive. The baby was taken to a local hospital and airlifted to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where she died the next day.

The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide after concluding that the baby’s head injuries were not caused by a fall.

Assistant Attorney General Andrew Benson conceded that the case was difficult because it was based on circumstantial evidence.
