LUBEC (AP) – A celebration is being planned for the 200th anniversary of the lighthouse marking the easternmost point of the U.S.
The original West Quoddy Light House in Lubec was built in 1808 to protect ships that were sailing the treacherous waters of eastern Maine. The current red-and-white-striped tower, erected in 185, is now automated and is a popular tourist attraction.
To celebrate the bicentennial of Maine’s fourth-oldest lighthouse, the West Quoddy Head Light Keepers Association is planning a week of activities during the week of July 19-26.
Events and festivities include lighthouse tours, a road race, music and food, nature walks and a recognition ceremony to honor former lightkeepers.
