Randy Hotham was the lead Republican voice advocating for the tax reform package, which would have lowered the income tax to a 6 percent flat rate, with credits for those in lower income brackets, in exchange for expanding the state sales tax to goods and services now not taxed.
The idea was to spread more of the tax burden to out-of-state visitors.
The package was months in the making in the Taxation Committee, but failed on the Senate floor, with most Republicans opposed to the plan.
In addition to his work in committee, he submitted a passing resolve to study incentives for people to join an ATV club.
According to the amended version of the resolve, the Department of Conservation will form a group with members of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and the Alliance of Trail Vehicles of Maine to study these incentives and report back with suggested legislation next year.
Hotham could not be reached for comment after the session.
