KENDUSKEAG (AP) – A 51-year-old woman died Monday in a fire at a mobile home in this Penobscot County town and investigators said smoking was the likely cause.

The victim, identified as Bonnie Freyenhagen, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Freyenhagen’s roommate discovered the fire when he returned home from work. The fire apparently started in the living room and the victim’s body was found near the rear door, according to the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

Investigators said she apparently was trying to escape the fire when she was overcome.

Freyenhagen’s dog also died in the fire.
