AUGUSTA – Sportsmen might be able to distinguish themselves on the road with a moose on their license plate, or possibly a deer and a trout.

Sen. Bruce Bryant, D-Oxford, who chairs the Legislature’s Inland Fisheries and Wildlife committee, is backing a specialty license plate to benefit sportsmen.

Bryant said Tuesday that he needs 2,000 people to sign up for plates to move the process along. He is recruiting people at sportsmen’s shows.

Most of the plate’s funds will go toward offsetting licensing fees. The rest of the funds will go toward supporting landowner relations, a tricky issue facing sportsmen, Bryant said.

Proceeds will also go toward fish hatchery maintenance.

Bryant said the fundraiser should bring in a minimum $400,000 or $500,000 for IFW

Bryant said he is not sure what the license plate will look like, but said he prefers a moose.
