WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) – A Maine man died Tuesday after he was seriously injured when his car was hit by a driver going the wrong way on Interstate 290 in Massachusetts.

Matthew Abercrombie, of Belfast, Maine, was driving west at around 1 a.m. Monday when a teenager driving east in the westbound lanes collided head-on with Abercrombie’s car.

Abercrombie, 27, and his passenger, Molly Barker, 26, of New Haven, Conn., were taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center’s University Campus in Worcester.

Massachusetts state police said Barker’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Abercrombie was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit on Monday but died Tuesday, the Worcester Telegram and Gazette reported.

Stephen Quintal, 18, was charged with driving under the influence, negligent driving so as to endanger and driving the wrong way on a state highway.

The District Attorney’s office may file additional charges, a spokeswoman said.
