TRENTON (AP) – A Trenton man was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon by a leopard at the Acadia Zoological Park, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office said.
The 46-year-old victim, a zoo employee whose name was not released, was transported to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth, according to Lt. Tim Cote, who would not release details of the incident.
Zoo manager Heather Grierson also declined to comment on how the man was injured. “Animals just do things,” she said.
Grierson declined to say whether the 13-year-old leopard had been quarantined or destroyed. Grierson said the zoo on Route 3 is a nonprofit entity that is not open to the general public.
The victim suffered serious injuries to his face and one arm, according to Cote, who said the injuries were not life threatening.
The federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration sent an investigator to the zoo.
