WILTON – A woman was killed and five others injured Friday when a truck collided head-on with an SUV on Route 2.
Avis Pettengill, 73, of Jay, a passenger in the SUV, was dead when rescue crews arrived at the scene about 3:30 p.m., police said. She had been a front-seat passenger in the vehicle. Four others, including two children in the SUV, were also hurt.
Police said the SUV was a Chevrolet driven by 29-year-old Shawn Hiscock of Jay. He suffered severe injuries in the wreck and was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to a Portland hospital where he was being evaluated late Friday.
His wife, 30-year-old Heather Hiscock, was sitting in the back of the SUV and suffered a head injury, police said. She was taken by LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, along with her 2-year-old son, Isaac. They were being treated late Friday; their conditions were not immediately known.
Another child in the SUV, Jordan Hiscock, 8, suffered less severe injuries and was treated at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington and later released, police said.
The second driver, heading west alone in a Dodge truck, was Richard Greco, 59, of Dixfield, police said. He escaped the crash with minor injuries and was later released from Franklin Memorial Hospital.
Police said early indications were that Greco was heading west, Hiscock east, when the vehicles collided. The front passenger seat of the SUV, where Pettingill was sitting, bore the brunt of the impact, police said.
Police said each of the victims appeared to have been wearing seat belts and the children were fastened into child safety seats.
The cause of the accident had not been determined late Friday.
Wilton police Chief Dennis Brown said witnesses reported that the driver of the truck was rounding a curve when it drifted into the path of the oncoming SUV.
The first Wilton police officer to arrive on the scene immediately radioed a Franklin County dispatcher in Farmington, reporting that four of the six victims had severe head injuries and one was trapped in a vehicle.
The accident was just east of the Dutch Treat diner and the Route 156 intersection. Traffic on Route 2 was shut down and rerouted through Wilton for nearly four hours.
Maine State Police reconstructed the crash site and were investigating the accident, along with Wilton police. Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call Wilton police at 645-3876 or 645-4222.
