FARMINGTON – Fashion statements on skis, a kayaker and a mummy were among the contestants in the 15th annual Downhill Dummy Competition at Titcomb Mountain Ski Area.

Other entries included Hershey’s Kisses, a Star Wars R2D2 clone, a Christmas tree outfitted with water balloon ornaments, a leprechaun in a lawn chair, Rumpelstiltskin and Capt. Underpants.

“It’s something for the kids. It’s fun,” said Dan Seabold of Wilton.

The first event featured hand-crafted dummies judged on originality, best workmanship, fastest time, longest distance, most spectacular crash and overall winner.

The second event – for any dummies who survived the speed and distance race – was a jump competition. Longest jump and most spectacular crash garnered prizes.

Fourteen dummies in all were entered, some of which arrived a scant seven minutes before judging began at 1 p.m.

Others, like the Seabold family’s Christmas tree dummy “Tannen-Bomber,” were assembled in the lineup near the ski lodge well before judging.

Sandwiched in between SpongeBob SquarePants and Happy the Jeep, which won best overall, Dan and Linda Seabold of Wilton and their 7-year-old daughter, Chelsea, quickly attached and outfitted their still-fragrant balsam fir in a tree stand mounted on Rossignol skis.

They watched as friends Fred and Denise Brittain of Farmington and their 7-year-old daughter, Katie, arrived pulling “R2Ski2” into the lineup.

Promptly ogled by several small children, the cute robot was made using rolls of white, blue and silver duct tape, Fred Brittain said.

Nearby, teacher Claudia Foley toiled with the Mill Stream Elementary School’s leprechaun, doing last-minute duct-tape work.

“I hope he survives the jump, because my kids have become so attached to him that if his head comes off, I might have to do some quick counseling,” she said.

Following the judging, children and adults hauled their entries upslope for the 2 p.m. start.

Setting the tone for the speed run, the first dummy zipped down, jumped a fence and bounced to a stop in a ditch to wild applause from the large crowd.

Rumpelstiltskin then zoomed down and smacked into a ski lift hut to an equal response. It was followed by the lucky leprechaun, which traveled between the hut and a utility pole.

R2Ski2 garnered wild applause when it jumped the ditch berm and continued across the Nordic ski area to the edge of the woods, setting a new dummy distance record, a ski patroller said.

Happy the Jeep, which blew out a sign and narrowly missed a building, went nearly as far.

The “Titcomb Express” engine drew several loud “uh-oh”s when it veered toward the judges. It careened into and nearly exploded through a bright orange safety fence before a second safety fence stopped the entry, which won for most spectacular crash.

In the jump competition, to loud sighs of dismay from the crowd and small children, SpongeBob took a nose dive right before the big leap.

The Hershey’s Kisses “Ode to Chocolate” grabbed big air to win longest jump. It also won fastest time and took second place overall.

Crowd pleaser R2Ski2, which won originality, overall distance, workmanship, and third-place overall, took a wild head-over-skis tumble before flipping upright and skiing to the bottom.

When the event ended, a smiling Dan Seabold lugged the Tannen-Bomber back to his car.

“We had lots of fun and that’s the best thing,” he said.
