FARMINGTON – An 8-year-old boy burned in a Roxbury campfire mishap on Friday is now a patient at Shriners Children’s Hospital in Boston and is doing well, his aunt said Monday.

Michael Martin of Strong suffered second- and third-degree burns Friday night when a fuel container being used to start a campfire exploded, spraying burning fuel that enveloped him in a fireball, an investigator with the Office of the State Fire Marshal said Saturday.

Michael’s family was gathered at the home of his grandfather, James Gallant of Roxbury, when the incident happened.

“It will be a process but Michael is doing very well,” his aunt, Andrea Adams of Phillips, said. Michael is expected to remain in the hospital for up to two or three weeks, she said.

“But he’s a strong young man,” she said, describing him as an “outgoing, active child who’s very straightforward and a very strong kid.”
