WILTON – Selectmen inspected a foreclosed property at 13 Temple Road in East Wilton on Wednesday.

The board adjourned Tuesday night and reconvened at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the property where the board and an appraiser walked through the house, said Town Manager Peter Nielsen.

After neighbors expressed concerns to selectmen about the empty house’s collapsing front porch and back shed, they decided to have an excavator there Monday or Tuesday to flatten the shed, take off the porch and remove an ell from the back of the building, he said.

Debris will be piled at the back of the lot and the fire department will be asked to burn it, he said.

The board also voted to seek bids on the house and lot. While there has been some damage done to the building, Nielsen thought the house could be rehabilitated, but if no one is interested, the demolition will continue and the board will sell the lot.

The house became the town’s property last Friday, Nielsen told selectmen Tuesday night when asking them to plan for its future.

Neighbors told the board that children’s footprints can be seen entering the empty structure and urged them to board it up before there is a disaster.

Selectman Russell Black suggested the board move quickly because of the safety issue but he also wanted to walk through the house before deciding what to do with it.

In May, a dozen East Wilton neighbors brought their concerns over the abandoned property to selectmen with a petition signed by 43 people. They asked that the building be demolished.
