JAY – A Farmington man faces multiple charges after he failed to stop for police Sunday and drove from North Jay to East Jay before his tires were punctured.
Christopher Q. Nault, 38, had his 3-year-old daughter in the car, but police didn’t know it until he stopped the car, police Chief Larry White Sr. said.
Another adult passenger was in the car, but White declined to release that person’s name in case charges are brought.
Nault was arrested on charges of eluding an officer, endangering the welfare of a child, driving to endanger, attaching false plates to a motor vehicle, possession of a suspended license, operating after suspension/habitual offender and failure to stop for an officer, White said.
Jay officer Michael Mejia attempted to stop a red car for exceeding the posted speed limit about 5:15 p.m. on Old Jay Hill Road, White said.
Mejia activated his lights and siren, but the car continued on across Route 4 to Route 17 toward East Dixfield at speeds of up to 65 miles per hour, White said. On several occasions, the passenger door was opened and shut, and the officer didn’t know if someone in the car was being abducted if material was being dumped, White said.
The car turned around on Route 17, headed back toward Route 4, turned left toward Wilton, right on Macomber Hill Road, crossed Route 133 to Plaisted Road, left on East Jay Road and right on Borough Road.
About 1 mile to 1 miles on that road, Franklin County Sheriff’s Cpl. Nate Bean laid down a spike mat and the driver drove over it, flattening two tires before stopping, White said.
Police ordered the pair out of the car at gunpoint, and that’s when police saw the 3-year-old child in the rear seat, he said.
Police could not see the child at anytime in the car until it stopped, he said.
“She was too small,” he said.
White declined to release the adult passenger’s name name in case charges are brought.
“As of today, we do not know why the door was opening or if they discarded anything,” White said.
The vehicle was impounded.
Three deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and a Wilton officer assisted Mejia, he said. White arrived after the vehicle had stopped.
Meanwhile, police were called to 26 Church St. for a report of criminal threatening, White said. Livermore Falls police Lt. Thomas Gould and officer Ken Bryant found a verbal dispute over a computer and arrested Timothy Witham, 21, of East Wilton on a charge of criminal threatening, White said.
