WILTON – Three youths have been charged in Wilton and Farmington for burglary and theft, said Wilton Police Chief Dennis Brown Thursday.
Two of the three male teens were charged earlier this week in connection with four burglaries in Jay.
The three teens, a 15-year-old and two 17-year-olds, had been under investigation for 14 burglaries and the theft of over $20,000 in the towns of Jay, Wilton, Farmington and New Sharon over the last six weeks.
Police also allege the youths used stolen money to purchase a red 1996 Mitshibishi Eclipse and a darker red 1988 Chevy Camaro. The cars have been confiscated by police, he said.
Other property seized by police included digital cameras and stereo equipment that may have been purchased with the stolen money, Brown said.
Police are still investigating how the juveniles were able to purchase the vehicles, Brown said. The cars were bought through a private sale, he said.
A break in the burglary cases came last Saturday when recently hired Wilton police officer Richard Caton IV, checked a parked car behind Wilton Academy.
A lone occupant was sleeping and consented to a search that revealed items from businesses in Jay and Farmington.
Jay officer Stephen Wilkinson investigated and received confessions on the four burglaries in Jay that resulted in charges Tuesday.
Wilton police and Farmington Detective Marc Bowering continued the investigation but Wilton has now filed charges, Brown said.
The youths were summonsed and released but court dates had not been set, he said.
