CARRABASSETT VALLEY – A Greene man is accused of tampering with a Cessna airplane, which started full-throttle, broke its tie-downs, crossed the taxiway and crashed into a second plane and a hangar at the Carrabassett Valley Airport, police said.
Carrabassett Valley police officer Roderick Small estimated there was $70,000 worth of damage, mostly to the wings of the planes, and about $200 to the wooden hangar.
Small said Travis Therrien, 25, who was working construction in the area, was charged by summons with aggravated criminal mischief Monday afternoon.
He is scheduled to appear on July 27 in Franklin County Superior Court in Farmington, Small said.
Police received a call Monday morning reporting that an airplane crashed into another airplane parked in a hangar.
Police determined that one of the Cessnas had been tampered with between Sunday night and Monday morning, Small said. Small said “alcohol was involved” in the incident.
The owners of the Cessna 172 planes are Peter McKendry and Thomas Carey, both of Carrabassett Valley, Small said.
