FARMINGTON – The sound of music will be heard on Main Street this summer when local musicians Bing and Nancy Crosby and Barry Wood, all of Jay, provide concerts on scheduled Tuesday nights.
The Board of Selectmen gave approval Tuesday to Crosby’s and Wood’s requests to hold concerts at the bandstand in Meetinghouse Park contingent on approval by Stephen Shible, director of parks and recreation.
The Crosbys’ play country music with some gospel. And because they like to perform, Nancy said Thursday, they asked to perform summer concerts on the third Tuesdays of June, July and August in Farmington. The couple sing and play rhythm and base guitars.
They have performed at the Gazebo in Livermore Falls during the summer for the last few years, and in Arizona where they spend winters, she said, and now have decided they would like to try a concert here. Occasionally, musical guests will appear with them.
Last year the couple won the Country Duo award and the All-Time Great Country Gospel award at the Maine Country Music Association award show.
Before retirement, they each worked for SAD 9. He was director of transportation, buildings and grounds and she served as secretary to the same.
There is no charge to attend the concerts, she said, but they will have a selection of their CDs available for purchase.
Wood, who plays country as well as contemporary music, will perform the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month in June, July and August and on Sept. 11.
The community has long enjoyed the band concerts provided by the Old Crow Band on Monday nights throughout the summer and now will have another opportunity to enjoy the music and the downtown park.
