FARMINGTON – Livermore Falls firefighters will finally get their wish – Farmington’s ladder truck is coming to them.
Farmington selectmen voted unanimously Tuesday night to award the 1988 E-One ladder truck to the Livermore Falls department – second-highest bidder in a process that’s been going on for months – for $105,000.
Selectmen originally voted in early January to award the truck to a Pennsylvania fire company. The Greenock Volunteer Fire Co. bid $118,000, which after fees would net the town $113,000. But Greenock bid on the condition that it could get interim funding to make the purchase.
Early this month, Town Manager Richard Davis said he received a letter from Greenock explaining the town had not been able to secure the funds and would have to withdraw the bid.
“I’d like to cut right to the chase and make an offer to Livermore Falls,” Selectman Stephan Bunker said. “If their bid still holds, we’ll accept it.”
Selectman Dennis Pike had initially suggested holding off a week to make sure Livermore Falls still wanted the truck.
“I’d like to see them get it. They certainly wanted it,” board Vice Chairman Charles Murray said.
Back in Livermore Falls, Fire Chief Ken Jones said he was relieved to finally have an answer. “It’s been a long time since last July,” he said. That’s when the town started discussing purchasing the truck. “Hopefully this is the final nail in the coffin, to put everything to rest.”
The drawn-out and at times quite tense process was a learning experience for both towns, Jones said. “I’m very relieved,” he said. “I’m tickled the truck will be coming to this community.”
