JAY – Selectmen will discuss how to use the opinion poll results on town services in upcoming budget planning when they meet today.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. at the Community Building voting area.

Last month, the results of surveys on municipal and school services were compiled. For the most part, people wanted services to be maintained or reduced.

But most people wanted emergency communications to be provided by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.

They also wanted sewer users to fund the entire Sewer Department budget instead of it being partially covered by taxation.

Jay residents have traditionally funded several outside services. However, the majority of survey respondents didn’t favor the town donating to several of those services, including the Junior Ski Team; Big Brothers, Big Sisters; Work First; Children’s Center; Cerebral Palsy, Day One and the pulp and paper museum.

The results of donating to the Fourth of July fireworks put on by the Jay-Livermore-Livermore Falls Chamber of Commerce were split with 109 “yes” votes and 109 “no” votes.

“We’re going to start receiving budgets,” selectmen’s Chairman Bill Harlow said Friday. “We’ll start laying out what we want (Town Manager) Ruth (Marden) and department managers to do.”

Part of that discussion will be how to use the poll results as a guideline in putting the budget together, he said.

The board will also hold a public hearing on the renewal of junkyard permits and consider renewal of Marden’s contract, which expires June 30, 2007.
