STRATTON – SAD 58 board members voted 5-4 Thursday to extend the district’s Ski-Skate Program to sixth-graders.
The program, run with the help of Sugarloaf/USA, currently brings district elementary students to Sugarloaf for skiing or skating lessons four mornings each winter. Program costs include $4 for ski rentals and a cookie, and transportation costs. After Thursday’s meeting, Ski-Skate will be extended to the sixth grade on a trial basis.
Board members also discussed whether or not to extend Ski-Skate to the seventh and eighth grades. According to Ellen James of Avon, “it’s too late for the seventh- and eighth-graders,” to start Ski-Skate now, as other programs, like basketball, have already been organized. “I know there’s people that don’t want the seventh- and eighth-graders to be missing that much class time,” she said.
Board members voted unanimously to allow the Stratton Elementary steel drum band to perform at the Tri-State Conference for School Business Officials in Portland on May 18 and 19.
The students will stay in Portland overnight at the conference organizer’s expense, performing once on May 18 and again on May 19. According to Assistant Superintendent Lorrie Arruda, “This is the first time a student group has been asked to perform at two different” times during the same Tri-State Conference.
Board members also voted to elect Strong-resident Mike Pond as school board chairman, and Sonya Dearborn of Kingfield as vice chairman.
