Stupid Things’ is theme for Old Home Days

PHILLIPS – People who do stupid things. That’s the theme this year for Phillips Old Home Days. Well, actually, it’s “The Stupid Things (Wo)Men Do.”

If last year’s theme of “You Might Be a Redneck If…” is any indication of what’s to come this year, it is sure to amuse. No fewer than three outhouses were seen rolling down Main Street in the parade last year.

In addition to the 47th annual parade at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, residents of Phillips will play host to more than a week of events starting this Saturday.

New this year will be a cruise with vintage vehicles at Bear Hill Variety from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Event organizer Janet White said she hopes to have between 20 and 25 vehicles from as far away as Vermont. Cash prizes, ribbons and trophies will be awarded based on public judging.

The traditional bean hole supper and chicken barbecue on Friday, Aug. 19, will not be the same without Ray Ellis, who passed away this year. The former resident and game warden was instrumental in the supper every year since its inception, and the event has been named in his honor.

And Steve Haines may want to get out of town before his friends and neighbors roast him from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Phillips Elementary School. Haines, the town’s road commissioner for 23 years, will be “honored” for his dedication to the town, according to White, who said she expects “a huge turnout.” Anyone wishing to speak at the roast is welcome but is asked to keep their remarks to under five minutes.
