FARMINGTON – Two Franklin County men are suing Dragon Products Co. for burns they say they received in 1999 while building the Livermore Falls Wastewater Treatment plant.

The two civil lawsuits were filed June 9 on behalf of Joseph L. Begin of Jay and Patrick M. Kenney of Carthage by their attorney Sumner H. Lipman of Augusta.

The men were working for Diaz Construction Co. of Jay on Aug. 11, 1999, and wearing appropriate clothing, including rubber boots, to work on the surface where the concrete floor was being poured.

The suit contends Dragon representatives failed to warn the men of dangerous caustic properties of the product being used, and the men’s feet were “severely burned.”

The suit also claims Dragon representatives allowed the concrete mixed for the job to remain in the truck in hot weather, heating it up and causing the men’s legs to be burned and severely injured.

Kenney has medical bills in excess of $17,000, loss of wages in excess of $8,000 and will have future loss of wages and loss of earning capacity in the amount of $745,000, the lawsuit states. Kenney has pain and suffering, and he will have future pain and suffering, scarring, disability and permanent impairment, the document states.

Begin has medical bills of $2,018.28, loss of wages in excess of $400,000, and will have future loss of wages and loss of earning capacity in the amount of $83,143.

Begin is permanently impaired due to his burned legs, and has significant scarring, the lawsuit claims.

Both men are seeking judgments against Dragon in a sum deemed fair and reasonable, plus interest and costs.

John Slagle, director of human resources at Dragon Products Co. in Portland, said Friday that because it was in litigation, it was not appropriate to discuss the lawsuits.
