FARMINGTON – A Solon man pleaded guilty Thursday to leaving the scene of an accident that seriously injured SAD 9’s special education director in June.
Edward Ferreira of New Sharon was running along Industry Road in New Sharon, training for a marathon, when he was struck by a car driven by Paul Hemond, 26, of Solon.
Assistant District Attorney Andrew Robinson said that Ferreira, who was 48 at the time, was running along the road when he looked back and saw a car coming at him. Ferreira thought the car would go by him but it struck him, Robinson added.
Ferreira was knocked unconscious and sustained a fractured pelvis and a knee injury, with both requiring several surgeries. To this day, Robinson said, he has not fully recovered.
If the case had gone to trial, Robinson said, Cpl. Steve Charles of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department would have testified that he found skid marks where the vehicle had stopped, and that there were beer cans on the side of the road that had been thrown out of the car.
Hemond told police that he panicked and went home, then turned himself in the next day. Robinson said Hemond’s boss would testify that he and Hemond had two beers after work that day.
Hemond’s attorney, Ron Hoffman, said that Hemond came upon Ferreira and attempted to veer away but hit Ferreira. Hoffman said he would explain it further during the sentencing hearing June 3.
