TURNER — The Leavitt Area field hockey team still proved it had enough spark to get the job done in a season opener Friday afternoon.

The Hornets utilized their speed and spread the scoring around as Emily Murphy, Casey Fichter and MyKayla McCann each notched goals in the first half en route to a 4-0 win against Oak Hill in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference tilt.

Leavitt (1-0) established control by going on the offensive early and Murphy banged home a shot one minute and eight seconds in to the game. Adrie Newton sent a pass over to Murphy on the left side. This sparked the momentum and had Oak Hill defenders Kayla Hodgkins, Taylor Fillion and Lauren Hall back pedaling.

“Things got better for us as the game went on,” Leavitt coach Wanda Ward-MacLean said. “Even though we scored three goals in the first half, I thought the play was sloppy. There was no support at times, and that’s a result of having so many new players.”

Oak Hill (0-1) was in a similar mode, but couldn’t find enough consistency to move the ball forward. Ariel D’Aessandris was one of five JV players called up to varsity because the flu had devastated the lineup.

The Hornets’ second goal was directly related to pressure and being in the right place at the right time. Oak Hill goalie Sara Lacroix (10 saves) stopped the initial shot, but the ball kicked out to Kylie Vincent in the middle. Vincent shoved it over to Fichter who one timed it home.

“We’ve got a lot of things to work on,” Oak Hill coach Betsy Gilbert said. “Our passing wasn’t working and we were not (taking advantage) of free hits. We can’t just hit the ball long and hope some one catches up with it.”

McCann scored the final two goals unassisted. Hornets goalies Taylor Eells and Briana Luce, each playing in first-ever varsity game, combined for the shutout.

Leavitt led in shots 14 to 2 and in corners, 13-9.

“We showed our inexperience,”Ward-MacLean said. “Of the 18 players we suited up, only seven earned letters, last year. I felt Kylie Vincent and Jen Vallee stood out consistently and the rest each did some good things at times.”
