SKOWHEGAN – Sarah E. Nightingale, 78, of Stevens Road, died Thursday, May 8, at Cedar Ridge Health Care Center.
She was born in Canaan on June 20, 1929, a daughter of C. Deane and Sadie Nason Salisbury. Sarah attended school in Canaan and graduated from Skowhegan High School and Bea’s School of Beauty Culture.
She also worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Derbyshire before she was married. She was a homemaker and a 64-year member of the Grange, first the Canaan Grange and then transferring to the Skowhegan Grange.
Sarah enjoyed cooking and won many ribbons for her home-cooked food at the Skowhegan Fair. In her younger years, she enjoyed knitting and playing cards. She loved music and entertaining company.
She is survived by her husband, Lloyd of Skowhegan; a daughter, Rebecca Nightingale of West Warwick, R.I.; two sons, Carroll and his wife, Colette, of Skowhegan, and Jeffrey of Winslow; two granddaughters, Angie-Dena Nightingale and Amanda Linn Nightingale; a great-grandson, William; two sisters, Arlene Chandler and her husband, Gene, of Mechanic Falls, and Mary Lee Hammond and her husband, Jerry, of Wilton; a brother-in-law, Doug Atwood of Skowhegan; a nephew, Dana Chandler of South Paris; and two nieces, Elizabeth Smith of Norway and Karen Atwood of Concord, N.C.
Sarah was predeceased by a son, Henry; and two sisters, Hester Salisbury and Clara Atwood.
