POLAND – Katherine Augusta Hayes Steeves, 78, former resident of Gray passed away on July 24, surrounded by her loving family in Poland.

Her passing is one year after her beloved husband of 49 years, Russell R. Steeves, passed away. The daughter of C. Earle Hayes and Verna Webb Campbell, she was born in Gray, on Oct. 14, 1928.

While living with her grandparents in New Gloucester, she began school at the Shaker Village School in New Gloucester and went to various schools throughout her formative years. She was an avid reader and dabbled in poetry.

She was a homemaker, and her family was her life. She was overjoyed when she recently joined the North Yarmouth Congregational Church, where family ties go back to 1806. She was married to the former Melvin Augustus Heath.

She is survived by sons, Melvin Heath, and wife, Peggy, Steven Heath, and wife, Judi, and Mark Heath, and wife, Marsha; daughters, Darlene Breton, and husband, Michael; and Holly Steeves, who shared her home in Poland with her parents; step children, Gerald Steeves, and wife, Jan, and Bonnie Dwyer, and husband, Thomas; a brother, Walter Hayes, and wife, Bernie; a sister, Sandra Verrill; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Deborah Heath Grant, in 1986.
