LEWISTON – Richard J. Provencal, 72, died on Thursday, March 1, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center after complications from cancer treatment. He had resided at Sandy Bottom Estates in Turner since retiring.

He was born Aug. 4, 1934, in Providence, R.I., the son of Louise (Farley) Provencal and the late Clifford Provencal Sr. He grew up in Cranston, R.I., and graduated from Cranston High, Class of 1953.

He went on to store management for the former Almacs of East Providence, R.I., Morse’s Food Mart of Canton, Mass., Food Lion of Salisbury, N.C., and retiring from CVS, formerly Revco Drug, in 1998. Upon moving to Maine, he returned to CVS, Auburn, finally retiring in 2004.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1959 with Operation Deep Freeze II and III and also served 11 years in the Navy Reserves.

Richard was past master of Ancient Brothers Lodge No. 178, Consistory Scottish Rite Valley of Portland, Lodge Council Chapter Valley of the Androscoggin, Kora Shriners, Order of Canadian Lumber Jacks, Sword of Bunker Hill, Bradford Royal Arch Chapter and Dunlap Council No. 8.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Denice (Kilroy); his mother, Louise; his brother, Clifford Jr., and his wife, Jeanine, of Westerville, Ohio; cousin, Shirley Bello, and her husband, Cesar, of Brunswick; and all his many friends he made since moving to Maine.
