WILTON – Olin E. White, 62, of Wilton, passed away at home in loving care on, March 29, after a long illness.

He was born, June 27, 1943, in Farmington, the son of Everett and Kathleen (Ried) White. He was raised and schooled in Kingfield, graduating from Kingfield High School in 1961, where he played baseball, and was captain of the basketball team winning the Western Maine Class “S” Championship in 1960.

In his youth, he was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending much of his time in those pursuits in the western mountains near his home.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving with the Combat Engineers from 1961 to 1965 in Germany, where he met and married Brigitte Reise upon his return home.

He was employed as a fire warden, heavy equipment operator, and truck driver until an accident in 1970 took the use of his legs. Although the accident was tragic and made him a paraplegic, it did not curb his enthusiasm for life or the outdoors.

He was active in coaching Wilton youth basketball in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. With the help of family and friends, he continued to hunt and fish until his health deteriorated in recent years.

He most enjoyed the many years he spent camping and fishing at Natanis Point Campground in Chain-of-Ponds Township and missed it greatly when he could no longer be there. Deer hunting was his favorite activity in the fall, spending much of the season sitting on his tractor in his favorite spots at the family camp in Starks. He shot a number of deer and some very fine bucks, even on his last hunt. He has been missed at camp and will continue to be.

In his later years, he was self-employed operating, North by East, a fly-fishing business specializing in custom fly tying and trout nets. His clientele ranged throughout Maine and states beyond. He was also a great source to find out where the fishing was hot and what flies to use.

He is survived by his loving companion of many years and caregiver during his illness, Joan Lanpher of Wilton, whom the family is forever indebted for the love and care she provided for Olin throughout the years; a son, Michael and his wife, Tammy and their daughter, Emma of New Sharon; a daughter, Heidi and her husband, Mike and their children, Haily and Christopher of Livermore; brothers, Stephen White Sr. and his wife, Donna, of Jay and Doug and his wife, Cheryl, of New Sharon; a niece, Debbie (White) Storer and her family of Jay; a nephew, Stephen White Jr. and his family of Jay; the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of his companion, Joan.

He was predeceased by his parents.

The family would also like to thank Sherrie Copeland of Helping Hands for her help in caring for Olin the last few years, the nurses of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, especially Kristy Brochu, R.N. and Marie Hupper, R.N.
