LEWISTON – Goldie Lourie, 82, of Lewiston, passed away in Freeport on Saturday, Nov. 19.
She was born on Dec. 5, 1922, in Auburn. At age 10, her father purchased a three-family house in Lewiston that was to become her family homestead for the next 63 years.
She graduated from Lewiston High School in the Class of 1940, and began a career in retail with her first job as a salesperson at the Lincoln Store on Lisbon Street.
She was a devoted daughter to both her parents and was able to care for their needs as they grew older in their familiar surroundings.
The love of her life was her husband, Joseph, also known as “George,” whom she met at age 16 and married during the tumultuous years of World War II on the eve of his being shipped out to fight in the European Theater.
He returned home safely and they had a happy marriage that lasted until his death in 1997. In the early years of their marriage, they worked together with her sister and brother-in-law, Ada and Nat Tapper, operating L & T Neighborhood Store on Pine Street in Lewiston.
She raised two sons, Stan and Phil, as a stay-at-home-mom. When she felt comfortable returning to work, she continued her retail career at Reid & Hughes where she had several responsibilities, finally being named store manager.
Upon her retirement, she continued to work part-time in banking at the processingcCenter for a predecessor of TD Banknorth.
During the last seven years of her husband’s life, Goldie became a full-time caregiver to Joseph’s needs as a dialysis patient, a trying task that she met with both care and giving.
Soon after Joseph’s death, she moved to Portland where she lived at Park-Danforth and later at the Hawthorne House in Freeport.
She is survived by her sister, Ada Tapper of Gorham; a son, Stan and daughter-in-law, Joan of Scarborough; a son, Phil and daughter-in-law, Pearl, of Framingham, Mass.; a granddaughter, Jennifer and her husband, Juane, of Chevy Chase, Md.; a granddaughter, Molly of Brookline, Mass.; a granddaughter, Sara; and a great-granddaughter, Ariana, both of Framingham, Mass. She is also survived by two nieces and five nephews and their families.
