100 years ago, 1917
One of the classic social events of the school year at Hebron took place Wednesday when the class of 1917 journeyed to Poland Spring for their class ride and dinner. The present occasion marked the thirty-fourth annual celebration of this event, and all but two of the dinners have been enjoyed at the famous Poland hostelry. It was the first visit of many of the class to the noted hotel, and they took advantage or the opportunity to become acquainted with all the surroundings, as the Rickers practically turned over the “keys of the city” to the jubilant seniors. They visited the spring, tried the toboggan slide, went snowshoeing, skiing and skating and had a snowball battle on the golf links.

50 years ago, 1967
Six Lewiston residents were among 12 skaters who passed official national dance and figure skating tests recently at Bowdoin, according to the Skating Club of Brunswick, Roland Nadeau passed the Pre-Silver dance test, 14-step, and he teamed up with Sylvia Leblanc to pass the preliminary dance examinations in Dutch Waltz, Canasta Tango and Swing Dance. Nadeau also did the Fiesta Tango, Willow Waltz and Ten-Fox to pass the bronze dance tests. Peggy Buehl, in the Willow Waltz, Sussana Buehl performing the Fiesta Tango, and Sybil Nadeau, doing the Fiesta Tango, also successfully completed the bronze dance tests while Kristen Curtis, Dutch Waltz, passed the preliminary dance examinations.

25 years ago, 1992
The Auburn Planning Board postponed approval of a proposed $4 million composting facility on Penley’s Corner Road after an emotional four-hour public hearing Tuesday. Local residents attending the meeting remained skeptical about the project despite repeated reassurance from the Lewiston-Auburn Water Pollution Control Authority that they want nothing more than to be “good neighbors.”
