If the act providing that state school funds shall be distributed in proportion to actual school attendance instead of in proportion to school population, as at present, which is now pending before the Legislature, the city of Lewiston will lose approximately $35,000 yearly. The yearly loss to Auburn will be approximately $5,000. A determined effort by school officials in cities all over the state will be made to prevent the passage of this act, and Lewiston and Auburn will do their share.

Lewiston high school students and employers will discuss not only their performance on the job, but their problems and pressures in school, under a new WorkAdvantage program announced Wednesday. Sponsored by the Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce, the Maine Job Service and six area high schools, 38 businesses have so far agreed to participate in WorkAdvantage. Students who enroll in the program will take pledges to compile “career folders,” which will include information on their grades, attendance records in school and teacher recommendations. They would also turn in their quarterly grade reports for a review by their employer. Under WorkAdvantage, the student and employer agree to limit work hours to no more than 10 hours during weeks when school is in session and to no later than 10 p.m. on school nights, except for special cases.
