AVON – Jose C. Marquez, 28, of Farmington died Wednesday, Dec. 1, as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident on his way to his job site at Saddleback Mountain.
He was born Aug. 6, 1976, in Villa Clara, Cuba, the son of Jose and Mirtha Cobo Marquez. He was employed by Sargent & Son Builders of Rangeley.
In November of 2000, he embarked on the greatest mission of his life, that forever changed the lives of 27 people who left Cuba in a row boat that he piloted, came through the Florida Keyes in the dark of night, and started new lives in the United States.
He quickly learned to speak English and worked hard to make a better life for himself. His family and friends describe him as a “passionate fisherman who could catch a fish in a mud puddle.”
His family and his young children were his pride and joy.
He is survived by his loving friend and mother of his children, Buffy Emmons, of Farmington; their daughter, Iliana Lee Emmons Marquez, and their son, Jose E. Marquez, all of Farmington; his parents of Encrucijada, Cuba; his sister, Ubi Marquez of Encrucijada, Cuba; his loving “Maine-mom,” Debbie Seeley of Farmington, and her daughter, Missy, of Farmington; his best friend, John Simoneau of Vienna; and many friends.
