AUBURN – Joseph P. Waltos, 82, a resident of 87 Grandview Ave., Auburn, died Saturday, May 31, at home after an extended illness.

He was born in Lowell, Mass., the youngest child of Peter and Anna Waltos. He attended schools in Lowell. Following graduation, he joined the United States Coast Guard and later the United States Marine Corps, serving overseas in the 3rd Marine Division during World War II.

During the war, he met and married Rose M. Schino from Trenton, N.J., where they lived until 2002. He worked for Mobil Oil Corporation ,retiring in 1982.

He was a lifelong member of the American Legion, served as volunteer at St. Francis Hospital and was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Trenton, N.J.

He cherished returning home to New England to visit his brothers and sisters and to attend family reunions. He was loved by family, friends and fellow workers for his kindness, warmth, sense of humor and concern for others. Kindness was returned to him through the skilled and gentle care given by hospice nurse, Karen Flynn, and the Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice team.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rose M. Waltos of Auburn; their three daughters and son-in-laws, Mary Ann and John Brozda of Morsesville, N.C., Jeannie and Bruce Smith of Minneapolis, Minn., and Rosemary and Gene Waltos-Petit of Auburn; two grandchildren, Richard and Ryan Brozda; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters.
