SOUTH PARIS – Hazel Ernestine Woodbury, 87, a long time resident of East Auburn Lumber Road died early Tuesday, May 18, at Market Square Health Care following a short illness.
She was born in Bradford, Sept. 9, 1916, the daughter of Hilliard C. and Alice R. (Hanson) Townsend and was a graduate of Stratton High School.
In 1957, she married Ira Woodbury in Augusta. He died in 1982. Mrs. Woodbury had been employed as a typesetter, and also at drug store and a movie theater in the Stratton area in the early years.
After moving to the Lewiston/Auburn area she was employed at Martins Store of Auburn and for many years in several area shoe shops. Mrs. Woodbury was a member of the East Auburn Community Center and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, was an avid fisherman and was a very dedicated Beano player in the local area. She also enjoyed for many years spending time at Martins Pond in northwestern Maine along Route 201.
Survivors include her attentive companion, Carroll Townsend of Norway; two sisters, Mrs. Glennis Townsend Gardner of Gorham and Mrs. Cecil (Gladys Townsend) Brackley of Livermore Falls; she was very much a favorite aunt to Douglas Gardner of Windsor, Theodore Gardner of Chelsea, Kenneth Gardner of Buxton, Mary Ellen Enos, Donald Enos, Joline Giordano and Patty Frazer all of Connecticut, Barbara Wallace of Lisbon Falls and Donna Gruel of Virginia; several great-nieces, nephews; and special neighbors, Gil and Dee Dee.
