After transferring cargo ranging from acid to flour, Safe Handling Inc. of Auburn transported a different kind of cargo around Auburn on its train Friday. The company recently acquired a caboose, which it is using as an office and has painted with its green and white logo. The St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad provided an engine and engineer during an open house to give rides from Lewiston Junction Road through the Danville area and over to Safe Handling’s headquarters off of Twin Road. The company specializes in connecting long-haul rail and short-haul trucking. A special facility to store muriatic acid shipped from Canada has been designed and could handle any other kinds of dangerous acids because of the precautions built in to prevent leakage.
