If more evidence were necessary, the confirmation hearings of John Bolton as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations have provided plenty of proof that the man is not well-suited to the job.
Through testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the country has learned that Bolton is a fiery opponent of multilateralism, holds the United Nations in contempt and is a dictatorial boss. Worst of all, though, the country has learned that Bolton aggressively tried to intimidate intelligence analysts when they offered opinions different from his own.
On at least three occasions, Bolton tried to have analysts – who, by the way were correct – punished for contradicting him. The analysts held their ground and kept Bolton from making false claims about a nonexistent biological weapons program in Cuba.
Bolton showed that he was not content with the truth and would seek revenge against anyone who stepped in the way of his ideologically guided allegations.
Bolton, because he’s shown himself willing to manipulate intelligence information and intimidate those with whom he disagrees, will do nothing to repair the damaged credibility of the United States on the world stage. He’s shown himself perfectly willing to fabricate and exaggerate about weapons proliferation. The next ambassador to the U.N. can’t carry that baggage and hope to succed.
Bolton has no place representing the United States at the U.N.
