Frisbees were flying. Music was playing. Lines were forming. And 400 first-year students from Bates College were getting an introduction to Lewiston and Auburn.
It was a great sight Monday as students took part in the “Welcome to Downtown L-A” event.
The tour, part of Bates’ new-student orientation, is sponsored by civic organizations as a way to make a positive impression on newcomers. Merchants give away treats, and the tour is coupled with a cookout at the college.
Late Monday afternoon, Kennedy Park was buzzing with activity as a steel drum band played in the gazebo and newly minted college students tossed Frisbees and lingered about.
It’s a hopeful time with 400 new faces in town. Relations between Bates and some members of the community aren’t always the best. But events that bring together students and their host community help ease any useless animosity.
We welcome the class of 2008, and say “good job” to Lewiston and Auburn for making a good first impression.
