LEWISTON — Jasmine Binette, an 11-year-old girl from Greene, was born with Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome, a rare congenital disorder, and she needs a bone marrow transplant to survive.
Binette has had to endure blood transfusions and has had to receive platelets on a regular basis. She is not able to attend school with her friends and she now has to be tutored as home. She lost a brother who was only 3-years-old to the illness.
There will be a bone marrow drive from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at Holy Family Church, 607 Sabattus St. A bone marrow drive is no more than a cheek swab. Potential donors must be between the ages of 18 and 55 and in good general health to register. For other eligibility requirements or to make a donation, visit www.dkmsamericas.org.
